| Hitachi Introduces 320 GB Mobile SATA HDDs |
| 02.26.08 (8:52 pm) [edit] |
Hitachi has announced volume shipment of new 5,400 RPM notebook hard drives with a maximum available capacity of 320GB. These drives are designed to support the multi-tasking needs of consumers and commercial users balancing mobile computing and movies, music and other digital media.
The new drives feature optional Bulk Data Encryption (BDE) for users requiring increased data security. Apart from these drives’ Serial ATA (SATA) interface provides a fast 3 GB/s data transfer rate, allowing the drive to be used in a wide variety of applications including mainstream computing, portable external storage devices and other computing uses. Seeking to be power-efficient, the drives only consume 1.8W of power when reading and writing and their .55W low power idle means longer battery life for more "unplugged" notebook time and a longer drive life expectancy.
"The Travelstar 5K320 addresses a growing demand for high capacity hard drives, which are at the heart of today’s notebook PCs, external storage devices, gaming consoles and other mobile computing applications," said Larry Swezey, director, Consumer and Commercial HDD, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. "And when coupled with our optional Bulk Data Encryption technology, the Travelstar 5K320 offers even greater value to notebook users by helping to guard against data theft."
The Travelstar 5K320 is now shipping worldwide. The enhanced-availability version of the drive is expected to ship in the second quarter of 2008. Pricing for these products is unknown as of now.

| 3 Sennheiser MX Series Earphones |
| 02.26.08 (8:48 pm) [edit] |
|
While most audiophiles and audiosnobs have heard of (or used) Sennheiser products, many still wonder if the brand can be the choice of the masses. In a previous interaction with the company, we found Sennheiser reluctant to be included in the budget class – and this is with reference not to affordability, but quality. However, over time the company has come out with newer products, and prices are on a downward spiral. You may recall that four months ago we had covered four earphones from Sennheiser in one review. It’s now time to check out another batch (of three products, this time). So here are some cheap – sorry, affordable – options from Sennheiser. I decided to start with this product as it’s my favorite. It claims to provide bass-driven stereo sound, and I think it’s true – most of the lows were well represented, if you can pardon the missing punch. The output is clear, but much of the warmth that we discerned in the OMX series is sadly missing. The MX 360 comes with what they call an 'asymmetric cable' design, which means the left ear cable is slightly shorter than the right, necessitating you to wear it round your neck. This may look cool, but I'm not a big fan since it keeps getting tugged whenever I move my head. The 3.5mm jack plug with a right-angled design works well. The package comes with three pair of earbuds, and a 2-year warranty. It costs Rs 690.

| Steam Plans on Adding Audio/Video Content |
| 02.26.08 (8:41 pm) [edit] |
Just when we thought that Valve's game distribution service couldn’t get any better, they go ahead and give us one more reason to love Steam! There’s word that Valve’s planning on adding music and video support to Steam.
Valve’s marketing VP, Doug Lombardi, revealed that these ideas were being discussed internally, and they’re already reaching out to companies that distribute this sort of media.
Steam’s already popular with over 15 million users. Add the ability to download and watch movies, TV shows and music videos and they’re sure to add another 15 million casual users that would want to check the service out, since it’s pretty much free to use.

| Denon F102 Mini Compo System |
| 02.26.08 (8:39 pm) [edit] |
In this world of surround sound entertainment, aluminum satellite speakers, and monstrous subwoofers, there still prevails a band of enthusiasts who prefer nice-sounding, pure audio. That's the reason why stereo systems haven't died out, and I hope they never do. Speaking of stereo systems, there's Denon, a high quality brand originating way back in 1910 in Japan, though under a different name. These days the company is a leader in AV receivers and DVD players, so let’s see if it lives up to its reputation. Yes, we're going to see how good Denon's latest stereo speaker system is. The product is a stereo receiver, CD player and bookshelf speaker combo – that is, a mini component audio system. The 'mini' can be misleading; these are very powerful systems, best used for quality music listening at home. The individual names are DCD-F102 for the player, DRA-F102 for the stereo receiver, and SC-F102 for the speakers. For convenience' sake let's call it the F102 system! Form Factor The electronics part (CD player and receiver) are clad in a metallic finish chassis, with a façade of similar, but thicker material. No clutter is seen anywhere, both the player and amp have their fronts as neat as a fresh haircut. The buttons too adhere to the monochrome scheme, so no flashiness. What remains is a classy, yet sober system. Left corners of the front panels sport the power pushbuttons, while the largish volume knob on the amp is located on the right. The CD tray occupies the prime center of the player, with a neat matrix of buttons to its right – which handle play/pause, navigation etc. The two-way, bass reflex speakers are part of the family with their simplistic design; bearing rectangular PVC finished MDF cabinets, with smooth rounded corners at the top and bottom edges. The cabinet colors vary; we received a maple colored one. The front baffle does not look like a regular speaker; the tweeter is aligned below the woofer. It's a 'soft dome' tweeter (as claimed by the manufacturer) while the woofer is a WOK-style design (no dust cap in the centre, just a sparkling white concave laminated diaphragm). This contrasts well with the jet-black tweeter. The total power drawn by the system can be as much as 120 watts. It plays CDs and MP3 CDs, plus AM/FM.

| Zebronics MP3 DJ Gamma and Uno |
| 02.11.08 (11:15 pm) [edit] |
|
Zebronics recently launched a couple of low-end, really cheap MP3 players called Gamma and Uno that are listed on its website as well. The lack of any details, however, could cause a bit of a problem if you're keen on a purchase. We managed to get these bare-bones players for testing, and here's what we found... MP3 DJ Gamma It looks as if Zebronics actually beat Creative to the punch – the Gamma, with an integrated speaker, was released before the stone plus(ith speaker) put in an appearance. Of course I wasn’t able to pit the two against each other as we haven’t got the latter for review yet. Form Factor Even with the minimal information at hand, I can tell you that while the Gamma is as heavy as the Zen Stone Plus, it's smaller, though not slimmer. It has a 1-inch OLED dual color display encased in a very scratch-prone plastic screen. At the side of the screen is the integrated speaker and below that is the Play/Pause key, which also functions as a Power key. On the top you’ll find a Power switch (real one this time!) followed by volume control keys and a Menu key. On the bottom are the navigation keys that let you skip tracks and adjust the volume. Beside them is a 3.5mm earphone socket. One side has a MiniUSB port and the other has a clasp to attach a neck strap or keychain. Performance The Gamma, which is compatible with MP3 and WMA formats, doesn't offer too many features. It has no radio or voice recorder. There's an external speaker, true, but it's not loud enough to entertain an audience. I wasn’t too happy with the bundled earphones. They were comfy in my ears but didn’t handle the volume very well when peaked. For some reason this seems to be a problem with a lot of the smaller companies and their players. I recommend that you get your own set of earphones. Even iPod earphones. Navigation is a cinch once you get a hang of the controls. For additional control of music quality, you have the option to use the available EQ presets. Thankfully they do make a difference. Unfortunately the lack of a manually customizable EQ is a bit of a downer. Transferring files is easy since it’s a matter of a simple copy-paste, and the transfer itself is quick. Poor battery life is a major drawback – I was able to get only 8-9 hours of nonstop music and that just doesn’t cut it. The Bottomline Though the player is decently priced at around Rs 2,000 for 1GB, the poor battery life fouls up things. On the plus side it makes an affordable gift since the music output and quality aren't so bad. It’s small and lightweight and has a provision for a neck strap. So, on the whole, it’s an okay product.

| iBall iRocker Earphones |
| 02.11.08 (11:09 pm) [edit] |
|
In this age of the iPod, the hot new thing to have is an iPod accessory. This offshoot, which consists of interesting gadgets such as docks and headphones, has been slowly taking over my reviewing schedule, as I find myself being swamped more with earphones and headphones rather than full-fledged speakers. However, it's the market that dictates what we review, so I went out looking for the cheapest 'good' earphones available, preferably with a brand name and not some Chinese innovation. I didn't have to wander too far; I stumbled on these iBall earphones at a store in Mumbai's Lamington Road. (I’m told they retail commonly everywhere.) Design and Performance These classic earphones sit on the entrance of your ear canal; they're not inserted like canal phones. One contemporary feature is the headband, a thin black curvilinear piece of plastic that ends in the two earphones. It fits behind the neck, and not over the head.
This design requires the product to be light, as your ears bear the entire weight of the unit. And it is lightweight, but not flimsy. The driver bears tiny logos, plus a silver rim that looks cool. The wire is long enough, and ends in a 3.5 mm EP jack. It may hurt the first time you wear this, especially if you're used to canal phones. The ergonomics aren’t the greatest and it takes some getting used to. The sound, on the other hand, is very good! It’s comparable to many of the more expensive counterparts. Yes, there are cheaper alternatives too, but they sound like whistles in water. The bass wasn't bad, while the overall sound had good clarity. The main issue with cheap headphones – 'brightness' – didn't pose much of a problem. The vocals and string instruments were right in front, but not jarring. Beats and percussive stuff too were tight, though not deep. I wasn’t expecting depth anyway, so I kinda liked the sound.
Verdict These earphones are cheap at just Rs 499, so morning walkers and solitary readers on a tight budget may find them interesting. Be warned, however, that the lack of comfort could put you off. So try on a pair if you can before you buy.

Garmin anticipates that the nüvifone will be available in the third quarter of 2008. Specific details about pricing and sales partners haven't been announced yet. | VALENTINE TIPS FOR A FREIND |
| 02.11.08 (11:04 pm) [edit] |
|
Come February and there's no doubt love is in the air. Yes, it’s that time of year when you dip into your much-depleted bank account and spend some hard-earned money on your Valentine. In case you happen to be a techno maniac, here’s an idea you could try out this year that will keep your sweetheart happy – and allow you to play with multiple gadgets at the same time!
Step One: The Way to One's Heart... If your partner’s mobile phone has a GPS unit (even Google Maps would suffice – anything that allows you to mark areas) here’s what you do. Select certain POIs (Points of Interest), perhaps in the shape of a heart if you really want to get into the swing of things. These hotspots (if I may call them that – heh!) should be in a conveniently compact area. It's preferable to avoid too much travel, or you may get an earful from your hot-and-bothered Valentine at the end of it all. And that's to be avoided at any cost.
Back to our mission. At each location you could have a friend meet your beloved and give him/her a token such as a flower (if your friend can be trusted, that is). The whole mission should be something on the lines of a treasure hunt, with interesting clues and people along the way. The last stop on the map could be someplace special to both of you, such as the coffee shop you went to on your first date. Anyway, that 'someplace special' should be the location for Step Two. You can accompany your partner there or, better still, wait at the designated place. For goodness' sake, DON'T BE LATE!
Step Two: Dining and Winning Let’s think out of the box for a moment. When I say 'movie', I don’t mean a crowded, noisy cinema hall. That's a sure-fire turn off. Besides, you might run into your ex there. So here are the ingredients: a large-screen PMP with a set of battery operated speakers. Let's hope your PMP has a provision for dual headphones, just in case the place you’ve chosen is somewhere outdoors and secluded. Make sure the PMP is fully charged, and carry extra batteries to guard against the possibility of the screen going blank on you at a crucial moment. Forget action and adventure; select a mushy movie for a change. You might also want to make sure your player has plenty of romantic songs to serenade your partner through dinner.
Step Three: Making it Click What you’ll need for Step Three is a small color photo printer. Make sure you have plenty of batteries. Also get your laptop (again fully charged) and the most vital ingredient of all, a digital camera or a mobile phone with a good camera. Capture plenty of images of the two of you. You can transfer the images to your laptop together and with Photoshop or other software create interesting pictures and print them via the printer. Many printers don’t require wires, so this isn't as far-fetched as you may think. hat’s my suggestion for a tech-happy Valentine’s Day. In case you’re not into elaborate plans (or are plain lazy), I can recommend some simpler ideas. First off, a music player always makes a great gift. Here are a couple of choices that won’t set you back too much. Creative Zen Stone/Zen Stone Plus The Zen Stone is a basic 1GB MP3 player with no frills. The Zen Stone Plus has a small OLED display as well, along with a built-in stopwatch and voice recorder, and is available in 2GB. The best part is both models are available in plenty of great colors, so you’ll be spoilt for choice. The Zen Stone is priced at Rs 2150 and the Zen Stone Plus is available for Rs 4150.
iPod nano The nano is a great gift and comes packed with memory. The new nano boasts Apple’s new iPod interface and some extra functions and features such as better games and a larger 2 inch screen for videos. Of course, this is not a cheap gift – the 4GB version is priced Rs 5700 and the 8GB will set you back by at least Rs 7800. But again you have plenty of colors to choose from, including the new Pink edition.
When it comes to gifts, how can one overlook mobile phones? If your Valentine has had the same handset for about a year, he or she is sure to be bored by it. So here are a couple of phones to consider... Sony Ericsson W200i
This may be a phone from Sony Ericsson's lower-end Walkman series but it's decent enough. It's equipped with a VGA camera and an FM radio with RDS. It supports external memory with M2 cards so there's enough space for music. It supports WAP and GPRS but doesn't have Bluetooth. But then you can't expect too much for Rs 4,700, can you? The good thing is it's available in some really cool colors, such as Street Gray, Black, Mono Blue, Sweet Pink and Aqua white. Nokia 5300 Xpress Music or Nokia 5200 The 5300 has a decent enough music player and is available in red and black. This slider phone supports Bluetooth with A2DP profile, GPRS with EDGE, infrared, microSD external memory support, and FM radio. It has a 1.3 megapixel camera. The 5300 would cost you about Rs 6300. If your pocket's feeling the pinch there's a slightly cheaper version, the Nokia 5200. This is available in blue and red, and has a VGA camera with a 128 x 128 pixel display. However, it doesn’t have a Bluetooth A2DP profile. The 5200 should set you back by about Rs 5000.
These are of course just a few suggestions on what you could do on V-Day. In case you have better ideas please email me, or post your suggestions in a forum thread or in our comments section. Who knows, you could be helping me out too.
